Scientists have raised hopes for a cheap and simple test for autism after discovering consistent differences between the microbes found in the guts of autistic people and those without the condition. The finding suggests that a routine stool sample test could help doctors identify autism early, meaning people would receive their diagnosis, and hopefully support, much faster than with the lengthy procedure used in clinics today.“Usually it takes three to four years to make a confirmed diagnosis for suspected autism, with most children diagnosed at six years old,” Prof Qi Su at the Chinese University of Hong Kong said. “Our microbiome…
One of the most detailed studies yet has cemented the link between autism and what dwells within the gut.The new analysis hasn’t just studied the bacteria native to the digestive tract, but the fungi, archaea, and viruses that can be found there, too. The team, led by researchers from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, has developed a comprehensive assay that reveals a correlation between changes across the entire gut microbiome composition and diagnosis with autism spectrum disorder. While we still don’t understand this link, the building evidence offers new ways to both diagnose and understand autism. “What is exciting…
Researchers have developed a method for diagnosing autism which could spare families years of uncertainty and spur crucial earlier treatments. The new AI analysis can identify the genetic markers of autism via biological activity in the brain, they report, with 89 to 95 percent accuracy. This new method starts out with standard brain-mapping via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) before re-analyzing those scans via AI to detect the movements of proteins, nutrients and other processes within the brain that may indicate autism. ‘Autism is traditionally diagnosed behaviorally,’ via a person’s speech, for example, as the medical team behind the process noted. ‘But [it] has a strong genetic…
Wave and licensees also highlight a 2022 paper by a technician at a licensee clinic in Australia who is also a doctoral candidate at Australia’s University of the Sunshine Coast. It looks at data from 28 patients at two MERT clinics in Australia whose brains showed “significant improvement” in their individual alpha frequency waves after treatment. Although some previous research has found correlations between atypical alpha wave frequency and autism diagnoses, six scientists told The Times that there isn’t yet enough evidence to understand how changes in alpha waves affect autistic traits, or any scientific consensus on whether “improvement” in…
Amahle Khomo (12), who is Autistic, hasn’t been to school since the age of nine, and her family is concerned about her lack of education. Zandile Khomo said she gave birth to Amahle in December 2011 and growing up in the deep rural area of Mahwaqa in Mtwalume she reached milestones but was unable to talk. “I took her to a local clinic where speech therapists told me that she could be a bit delayed.” They were referred to Port Shepstone Regional Hospital where Amahle was diagnosed with Autism. “After taking medication for her condition, she started talking, even though…
Autism spectrum disease has yet to be attributed to a single cause due to its vast range of symptoms and severity. However, a study conducted by University of Virginia researchers reveals a promising new strategy for obtaining answers, which could lead to breakthroughs in the study of other neurological diseases and disorders. Current autism research focuses on observing and understanding the disorder through the study of its behavioural consequences.(Twitter/curiositygrows1) Current autism research focuses on observing and understanding the disorder through the study of its behavioural consequences, using techniques such as functional magnetic resonance imaging to map the brain’s responses to…
In remarkable parallel, the more overgrowth a BCO demonstrated, the more overgrowth was found in social regions of the profound autism child’s brain and the lower the child’s attention to social stimuli. These differences were clear when compared against norms of hundreds and thousands of toddlers studied by the UC San Diego Autism Center of Excellence. What’s more, BCOs from toddlers with profound autism grew too fast as well as too big. “The bigger the brain, the better isn’t necessarily true,” agreed Alysson Muotri, Ph.D., director of the Sanford Stem Cell Institute’s Integrated Space Stem Cell Orbital Research Center at…

ByZarafshan Shiraz, New Delhi Jul 13, 2024 01:01 PM IST The gut microbiome might have more than a passing influence on ASD as new study links gut health with autism, raising the possibility of new treatments Autism is considered a developmental disorder inhibiting socialisation and some common signs and symptoms include difficulty in eye contact, difficulty in communication and social interaction, sensory difficulties and repetitive movements where children with Autism frequently experience stress for various reasons like daily chores or activities, struggle to express their distress and provoking anxiety, which can lead to disruptive behaviour. To help them grow and…
