A ‘miracle trial’ claims that severe autism can be reversed and symptoms can be reduced if a child is treated regularly from a young age.The unprecedented findings follow a two-year study involving two twin girls in the United States who were diagnosed with autism at 20-months-old. As a part of the pioneering research, the programme was designed to help both girls thrive and flourish.Scientists are claiming the programme was a success with the twins seeing ‘dramatic’ changes in their symptoms. One of the girls, named Twin P, saw her score on the Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist dramatically drop from 43 out of…
My mom, a daycare teacher, recently told me that over the past decade she and her colleagues have been seeing a gradual increase in children who exhibit behavior associated with autism. Many of these children are later diagnosed with the neurodevelopmental disorder. “It could be that what your mother and her colleagues are seeing are characteristics that the children exhibited in the past; [teachers] just weren’t as aware of them as they are now,” Idan Menashe, director of Israel’s national autism research center, tells ISRAEL21c. Source: Pixabay/Mohamed_hassan Scientists have developed a new artificial intelligence (AI) diagnostic tool that can help identify autism risk in toddlers. A new study shows how AI machine learning can predict Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) risk in children under 24 months old with nearly 80% accuracy. The research, published in August 2024 in JAMA Network Open, was conducted using U.S. autism datasets and performed by researchers at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden. Autism spectrum disorder is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder that affects social, behavioral, learning, and communication skills. Source: Bunto_Artist / Shutterstock Most women are diagnosed with autism late in life. The CDC indicates that for every four men with autism, there is one autistic woman. However, a more recent study by McCrossin (2022) shows that this data is biased, and if you take diagnostic bias into consideration, the actual ratio is probably 3 to 4, with 80 percent of females being diagnosed after they are 18. According to Sara Hendrickx’s book Women and Girls With Autism Spectrum Disorder, this is more accurate. I am one of these late-diagnosed women, and every day, I marvel at how no…
A 14-year-old student with autism was identified by family members as one of four victims killed in Wednesday’s mass shooting at a Georgia high school. Mason Schermerhorn’s desperate relatives had circulated his photo on social media after they couldn’t reach the teen following the shooting, according to WSBTV. “If he is escalated, PLEASE use a calm voice with him,” family members posted online. “Let him know his mom is looking for him for reassurance.” A 14-year-old student with autism, Mason Schermerhorn, was identified by family members Wednesday after the mass shooting killed four people.
