GPs were today urged to widen testing for an incurable genetic condition, often mistaken for autism, that can cause learning disabilities. Fragile X syndrome, so rare it affects around one in 4,000 men and one in 6,000 women, is caused by a genetic mutation that disrupts brain development. Not everyone with the mutation will inherit the condition.
